The word good can make you think of several things. Of course when I think of the word good I
think of something that tastes good. When
I visit back to my classroom days a student that was good acted in the correct
manner. When I think of a good life it
makes me think of peace and joy. What do
you think of when you think of the word good?
In dictionary.com the definition of good means: morally excellent,
satisfactory, high quality, right, and proper, well behaved.
So with that being said I now ask you, are you a good person
or are you a Christian person? Are you
just not good on the outside but also on the inside? We know that there are good people that
aren’t very Christian and we also know some Christian people that at some times
may not be good. If that of being a good
person was the only requirement for being a Christian then even the atheist
that is good would be a Christian and how would that be? When you think of it this way it makes you
think. It may make you even
question. Much like the concept of
beauty. Pretty is as pretty does, beauty
is in the eye of the beholder. Just as
beauty can conceal what lies on the inside of a person so can a good outside
characteristic. A person can be
beautiful on the outside, but ugly on the inside just as the good person. But
not the Christian, what you see on the outside also lies on the inside.
The lesson here is a person can be good, but not be a
Christian. To be a Christian we can’t be
separated from God. We need to be
connected to Him in everything. We must
have accepted Jesus as our Savior. Good
works do not lead to salvation. It is
those that throw their selves at His mercy, asking for forgiveness. Those that realize that only through Him we
are saved.
The message of Jesus wasn’t that we were all good; it was
that none of us are good. But He loves
us no matter what, He loves us warts and all.
It is through Him that we are forgiven and it is only through Him that
we are good.
Romans 3:10
New International Version (NIV)
10 As it is written:
“There
is no one righteous, not even one;
Romans 3:28
New International Version (NIV)
28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the
works of the law.
Galatians 2:16
New International Version (NIV)
16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by
faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we
may be justified by faith in[a]
Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one
will be justified.
Ephesians 2:8
New International Version (NIV)
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not
from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Titus 3:4-5
New International Version (NIV)
4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he
saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his
mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy
Spirit,
