Horatio Spafford was a wealthy lawyer in Chicago in the
1800’s. His life was thriving. He had a large family, his wife, a son and
four daughters to share his life with.
Tragedy struck him though. His
son died, fire destroyed every real estate investment he had and he lost his
four daughters. How could one deal with
such tragedies in a lifetime? As
Spafford traveled to England on a boat to meet his grieving wife he spoke the famous
words that today are still spoken. As he
reached the part of the water where his daughters had drowned he spoke these
words, when sorrow like sea billows roll; it is well, it is well with my
soul. Phillip Bliss loved these
words. He took them and composed a
beautiful piece of music. Today this
hymn is still heard ringing throughout churches on Sunday mornings.
This morning Joel Olsten took these words and gave them
meaning. God has promised us that all
things will work out for our good. When
we look at characters in the bible we can see this is so. Job, Daniel, Paul, they all suffered, they
all had issues, but they all had faith in the Lord. They knew that even though they struggled the
Lord was with them. They knew that it
was well with their soul. No matter what
happened it will be well.
God has the final say on this earth. When the devil tries to steal your joy. When sorrow fills your days. When you are beat down to nothing. When your mind starts telling you the
negative remember, “ALL IS WELL” all is well with God.
